The American Jewish Experience

This course will cover 6 topics spanning through all corners of American Jewish life, starting with a timeline of key dates in history both in the US and in Dallas and moving all the way through important issues like the 3 Generation Hypothesis and how we teach out children about Judaism. There will also be some focus and highlights on Jews as creators of culture, as well as in politics, science, Civil Rights, sports.

Class Timeline:
  • Lesson 1(10/9): A timeline of key dates in history both in the US and in Dallas
  • Lesson 2(10/16): The 3 Generation Hypothesis – Immigration, Acculturation and Americanized Judaism
  • Lesson 3(10/23):   How we teach our children about Judaism – past and present (Jewish camp, and day school vs. the supplemental school)
  • Lesson 4(10/30) & 5(11/6):   Jews as creators of culture from music to movies to TV to comedy and more
  • Lesson 6(11/13):   Jews in Politics, Science, Civil Rights, Sports – Leaders in the forefront and behind the scenes
