Parshat Chayei Sarah and Veterans Day: The Legacy We Carry
Message from the CEO · Todd Polikoff, Chief Executive Officer, Aaron Family JCC · November 6, 2026
This Shabbat, as we read Parashat Chayei Sarah, we encounter a portion of the Torah that begins with Sarah's death. Yet, despite its title, “The Life of Sarah,” much of the portion is about what happens after her passing. Abraham mourns his wife, honors her memory, and begins thinking about their family's future. Her life may have ended, but her influence and legacy would continue through the generations that followed.
This week's Torah portion connects meaningfully to Veterans Day, which we will observe on November 11. We honor the men and women who have served our country not simply for the years they wore a uniform, but for the sacrifices they made and the lasting impact of their service. Their legacy lives on in the freedoms we enjoy, the opportunities available to future generations, and the communities we have the privilege of building.
Both Chayei Sarah and Veterans Day remind us that a person's life is measured not only by the years they lived or the work they accomplished, but also by what they leave behind. Legacy is not simply about remembering the past; it is about recognizing how the actions and sacrifices of those who came before us shape our present and influence our future.
At the Aaron Family JCC, we see the importance of that legacy every day. We bring generations together, create opportunities for meaningful connections, and help pass along the traditions, values, and relationships that strengthen our community. The work we do today becomes part of the foundation future generations will build on.
As we approach Veterans Day, let us take a moment to thank those who have served our country and recognize the families who have shared in their sacrifices. May we honor their legacy not only through our gratitude, but through the way we live, the communities we strengthen, and the opportunities we create for those who will follow us.
Shabbat Shalom,
Todd
