Pool Policies

The rules that keep everyone safe: lifeguard-only operation, supervision for 13 and under, the wristband system, and the swim test.

Aquatics Facility Rules

  • The aquatic facility is open only when lifeguards are on duty.
  • No diving. Extended breath-holding is dangerous and prohibited.
  • In an emergency, dial 9-911 from the emergency phone in the gray box near the outdoor restrooms.
  • Persons 13 and under must be supervised by an adult at all times; non-swimmers stay within arm's reach.
  • Persons 13 and under take the swim test or are designated non-swimmers.
  • No pets, no glass in the pool yard.
  • No swimming with open sores, skin or eye disease, nasal or ear discharge, or communicable illness, or within two weeks of diarrhea.
  • Do not alter or remove safety equipment except in an actual emergency.
  • Swim diapers required for children not toilet trained.
  • Appropriate swimwear only; no cutoffs or street clothes.
  • Follow lifeguard instructions at all times.

Wristband Policy

Access is for J members, their guests, and designated groups. Members and guests 14 and up receive a daily colored wristband. Those 13 and under wear a swim-test wristband: green for proficient swimmers, orange for non-swimmers and opt-outs.

Swim Test Procedure

1. Jump in

Feet first, resurface without goggles.

2. Swim 25 yards

Freestyle or breaststroke on the front, at the surface, with consistent forward progress. No turning to the back, no swimming underwater.

3. Tread 30 seconds

Face and head above water. No floating on the back.

4. Climb out

Independently, without ladder or steps.

A swimmer who becomes vertical, stops, or grabs the wall does not pass that day and can retest another day.
