Sylvan T. Baer Grant for feeding seniors
Aaron Family Jewish Community Center Recipient of $30,000 Grant from Sylvan T. Baer Foundation for Feeding Seniors in DFW
DALLAS, TX – October 2021: The Aaron Family Jewish Community Center of Dallas (AJFCC) has been named a 2021 recipient of a $30,000 grant from the Sylvan T. Baer Foundation in partnership with the Dallas Jewish Community Foundation for its congregate senior meals program. This grant will allow the AFJCC to continue to serve frozen Kosher meals every Tuesday to seniors in the DFW Metroplex through a contactless drive-through system on their campus in addition to preparing hot meals onsite starting in November 2021.
The program is beneficial to participants because they are assured of having nutritionally balanced meals each day. With the rising cost of Kosher food, increasing number of seniors who will take advantage of this program, and the added expense of adding mandated health and safety protocols surrounding COVID-19, it’s necessary for the agency to find resources to help subsidize these costs.
From March 2020-September 2021, the AJFCC has served more than 72,000 frozen meals to seniors 60+ who live in the DFW Metroplex. Many program participants live within a 10 mile radius of the AFJCC campus, but the program is also available to individuals who reside outside this geographic scope.
“This generous grant will ensure that we can continue to serve a vital need, said Katharine Rubenstein, JCC Senior Adult Program Director. Our precious, vulnerable seniors appreciate not having to plan, shop, prepare and cook nutritious meals for themselves during this very precarious time. Our team, dubbed ‘The Food Angels’ by our participants, are constantly told these meals are lifesaving! Many of our folks have seen their already limited finances negatively impacted by the pandemic.”
The AFJCC is the only congregate meal site in the DFW Metroplex servicing Kosher meals for senior adults. Access to nutritious meals is of utmost importance for seniors’ health and emotional support, and the AFJCC is committed to continue serving meals to their senior adult population for many years to come.

About the Dallas Jewish Community Foundation
The DJCF spends a lot of time and energy helping families and individuals create legacies. The amount varies but the mission is the same: take care of our nonprofit agencies in perpetuity, thereby taking care of the community around us. This is our primary focus – grow philanthropy that will not only be purposeful now but for generations to come. Therefore, the DJCF is honored to be the expert consultant to Bank of America, N.A. (BoA) on a foundation that they own. A foundation that has provided a wealth of good to our Jewish community.
Since 1965, the Sylvan T. Baer Foundation has been driven by a simple, yet powerful, mission: to assist needy and deserving Jews. Fast forward more than half-a-century later and the Foundation has awarded over $7 million in honor of Sylvan T. Baer’s parents, Jacob and Helen Baer. This year, the Foundation intends to grow that generous total by awarding grants to Jewish organizations of religious, scientific, literary, medical, educational, or other charitable purposes in North Texas.
