Austria, on the eve of Hitler’s takeover, is the setting for this spectacularly-shot coming-of-age drama. Seventeen year-old Franz travels to Vienna to become an apprentice to Otto, a generous World War I veteran, who welcomes all customers, including communists and Jews to his store. There, Franz meets Sigmund Freud, who is a regular customer and the two develop an instant bond. When Franz falls helplessly in love with a mysterious music hall dancer, he turns to Freud for advice on how to win her over. As war approaches, Franz’s personal problems are swept up into the larger events that are shaking the foundations of Europe and the world.
Adapted from the 2017 novel of Austrian writer Robert Seethaler, The Tobacconist expertly captures the tensions in Vienna, as the Nazi party gains a foothold in the city. Veteran actor Bruno Ganz gives an intriguing portrayal of Sigmund Freud.
